Lesson 5 – Skimming and Scanning

RF
We did reading fluency practice today with Reading 4: Defining Education.  You entered today's time on your spreadsheet (RF Log) in Google Sheets.

Speed reading is good for fluency practice.

Quizlet
After entering your scores into your RF Log, you spent some time studying vocabulary on Quizlet.

Vocabulary study is a form of language-focused learning.

Four Strands Quiz
We took a quiz about The Four Strands.

Take the quiz with this form:
Four Strands Quiz

SR
We tried scanning and skimming skills with pp. 28-29 in SR.

Then we tried previewing and skimming for Task C on p. 52.

Practicing reading skills is an example of language-focused learning.

Send your answers for SR: Task 2 (p. 30) using Google Docs. Check RtF p. 12 about how to write a good paragraph.

Follow these steps:

  • Make a new Google Doc and share it with me.'
  • Give it the title of your full name + RW1F + L5 (Taro Suzuki's RW1F L5).
    Due 5/23 23:59

I recommend also downloading the Google Docs app for your smartphone.

Extensive Reading (ER)
Near the end of class, we had time to read from our graded readers for extensive reading. ER is meaningful input.

Next Week
To prepare for next week:
  • Practice Quizlet 5 minutes (or more!) every day. Try our class set. We have a quiz next week.
  • Read from your graded reader every day. Don't forget to bring it to class every week.
  • Do the tasks in RtF: scanning (pp. 15-16) and skimming (pp. 17-18) reading skills.
  • Do Task A (p. 52) in SR
  • Do After You Read: Task A (pp. 55) in SR.
